From his auspicious debut, Tubular Bells (also known as the theme for the film The Exorcist), to his latest release, Islands, Oldfield has continued to explore the question of personal transition. Tubular Bells is an instrumental record that weaves hypnotic tone poems with vocal effects, orchestral arrangements, and of course, those incredible tubular bells. Oldfield's fifty-minute composition floats and dips and bobs and rises to a transcendent crescendo, leaving the listener breathless and blissed. Islands is unusual in that side one features Oldfield's instrumentals while side two showcases six rock / pop compositions with vocals by Bonnie Tyler and Max Bacon, among others.
